It is surprisingly easy to get a hot meal in Montreal for free (or very very cheap). None of the soup kitchens require identification or proof of your need, and are open for everyone. Different organizations serve on different days and with different styles – it is possible to find everything from a vegan curry dinner to a bacon-and-eggs breakfast.

The Multi-Caf – A kitchen in Cote-des-Neiges which serves hot breakfast and lunch for $1 to anyone who comes by, Monday to Friday.

The Peoples Potato, The Midnight Kitchen – Student run vegan lunch spots on Concordia and McGill campuses respectively where anyone (though the clientelle is, predictably, mostly students) can get a delicious free or by-donation lunch, Monday to Friday. The Peoples Potato tends to serve larger portions, but the Midnight Kitchen always has a desert on the menu!

Food not Bombs An anti-war and anti-poverty group with chapters all over the world, who regularly serve vegan food to passers-by and promote community cohesion at various outdoor locations or near metro stations in St Henri and the Plateau areas of Montreal.
