What is Recuperation?
Interception at the stores and restaurants where food is being thrown away to claim products before they actually reach the garbage is called food recuperation.
This is a great way to get prepared meals from restoraunts delis (soups, sandwiches, etc.), but can also be great for fresh produce, breads, and other food product pick-up. Many stores have to throw out perfectly edible produce to make room for newly arrived shipments, and are happy to know that it is not being wasted.

How do you do it?
The easiest way to set up food recuperation relationships is to knock at the back door of the restaurant or shop in question just after closing, and ask if they are throwing anything away. When they ask why, you can explain your motives for recuperating food (read over the first section of this website –The Paradox– for ideas), emphasizing that much of what goes to the landfill is still edible. A good fraction of the time, the shop owner will be happy to let you take whatever they have.
